Hiring a Car
If you are hiring a car it is advisable to hire with a reputable company such as Hertz or Avis or with a company which belongs to the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA).
If you hire a car from a BVRLA member and encounter a problem, which you are unable to resolve with the hire company, contact the BVRLA (www.bvrla.co.uk/) for assistance.
When collecting a hire car, you will need to show the hire company your driving licence and credit card. It’s also advisable to take your passport with you.
Remember you are bound by the agreement you sign, so before signing a rental agreement take note of the following points:
- Read the rental agreement for hidden/additional costs, and do this before you sign!
- If you are renting a car on a mileage basis, check that the mileage is recorded accurately on the rental agreement both on collection and on return.
- Inspect the car for any dents, scratches and general damages (including the interior) before leaving the hire company premises. Any damage should be brought to the immediate attention of the hire company and should be noted on your rental agreement - otherwise you risk being charged for the damage.
- Check that the seatbelts, brakes, lights and windscreen wipers are all in good working order. Also, made sure there are no cracks on the windscreen and no bald patches on the tyres.
- Check whether you have to return the car with a full tank of petrol. If you do, ask where the nearest garage is.
- Ask what to do if you are involved in an accident or breakdown.
