National Insurance

What is National Insurance?

National Insurance is a deduction from your salary to fund social services such as the National Health Service (NHS) and state pensions.

Do I have to pay National Insurance?

Everyone who works in the UK must pay National Insurance. Your employer will automatically deduct National Insurance from your salary, along with income tax.

How much will I pay in National Insurance?

How much you pay depends on your circumstances and how much you earn. As a guide, an employed person will pay about 11% of their salary in National Insurance.

What is a National Insurance number?

A National Insurance number is made up of two letters, six numbers and another letter: e.g. JH 54 33 21 C.

The number you are given is unique to you, and it will be used by Government departments’ (such as the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Inland Revenue) to record your tax and National Insurance contributions.

How do I get a National Insurance number?

To get a National Insurance number, contact your local Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and arrange an appointment.

To find the nearest DWP office to you, call the National Insurance helpline (Tel: 0845 915 7006).

Can I simply turn up at my local DWP office and get a National Insurance number?

In theory yes, but it could take hours for you to be seen by the appropriate member of staff. It’s much better to phone in advance and make an appointment.

I’ve arranged an appointment to get my National Insurance number, now what?

When you go to your appointment, take some identification with you (such as your passport, a payslip and proof of your address – the more ID the better!) You will then be given a temporary National Insurance number which you can use until your official NI card arrives.

Can I start work before I get a National Insurance number?

Yes. Your employer can issue you with a temporary National Insurance number until you receive your permanent number.

Can I get a National Insurance refund?

No. However, you may redirect some of your National Insurance contributions into your pension fund at home. Contact a tax specialist for advice.
