Job Hunting

The easiest way to find work in the UK, and especially in London, is through a recruitment agency.  There are literally hundreds of them throughout the UK and no matter which city you settle in, or what type of work you are looking for, you’ll find at least a half dozen agencies specialising in your field.

To secure work quickly:

  • Email your CV to a number of recruitment agencies and request an appointment with one of their consultants.
  • Dress smartly when meeting a recruitment consultant and treat the meeting like an interview.  Take your CV, references, passport, National Insurance (NI) number and bank details with you.
  • Let the consultant know what type of work you’re looking for and ask him/her if they can help you. This may sound obvious, but lots of people simple say “I just need money, I’ll do anything” and then wonder why the only jobs they’re offered involve photocopying and filing.
  • Be realistic about the kind of job you are capable of doing i.e. if you have a qualification and no work experience DON’T come to the UK with a hundred bucks in your pocket and expect to land your dream job earning hundreds of pounds in your desired field.  It’s just not going to happen.  Likewise, if a recruitment consultant tells you the market is slow and there is little work available in your desired field, consider being flexible rather than unemployed – take whatever job they can offer you until something more suitable comes along.
  • If you’re looking for office based work, expect to be tested on various computer packages, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Once you register with a recruitment agency, keep in contact – BUY A MOBILE PHONE!
